(Daily Beast) - Gordon Parks was a self-taught filmmaker, poet, and photographer widely praised for documenting the African-American experience (he was the first African-American on staff at LIFE magazine). Since his death at 93 in 2006, the Gordon Parks Foundation has honored his legacy with a glamorous auction in Manhattan’s Central Park, often bringing out the cream of the both the fashion and art worlds. My son did his 5th grade report on Gordon Parks. Parks was so versatile it was a challenge for my son to fit all of Parks' many accomplishments into his report.
Photographer, poet, novelist, composer, AND directed "Shaft." He covered a lot of ground.
