1619: First African slaves arrive in Jamestown, Virginia

The labor intensive tobacco plantations led to the importation of the colony's first black "indentured servants". In August 1619, 20 black men were purchased from a passing [Dutch] Privateer ship bound from Luanda, Angola, to Vera Cruz, Mexico.
