Historian considers how a local war hero could have attacked Germany


(York Daily Record) - In November 1944, as the Allied armies were bogged down in France and Belgium about 40 miles west of the Rhine River, farther south, York native Lt. Gen. Jacob Loucks Devers brought his 6th Army Group to the river's edge. Devers had his men practice river crossings and sent patrols across the river -- into Germany -- to probe the Nazi defenses. He planned to cross the Rhine in late November or early December, move through the loosely defended Black Forest and strike the Germans from behind, in hopes of collapsing the German line. Continued
