The dead & the colored dead

How race obsessed were our forebears? Very. Every now & then I run across something that reminds me of how flat-out weird that must have been. Take for example this plaque honoring Harford County soldiers killed in World War One: next to every black soldier killed is the word "colored." They died serving their country, wasn't that enough? No it wasn't, not back then. If you click on the 2nd photo, you should be able to read all the names.
