when I insist that maryland is a sothern state my Georgia-bron girlfriend only smiles and gives me that patronizing poor decluded man look. But though it may not be considered so in Georgia or Alabama maryland is a "southern state by virute of being below the Mason-Dixon line and having a large slave population--87,189 accriding to the 1860 census.
