Fenwick Island Lighthouse a warm welcome sign


(delmarvanow.com) - Few people, it seemed, spent much time on Thomas Fenwick's island. Before the Europeans arrived in the 17th century, Native Americans maintained permanent villages on the mainland; and they visited Fenwick Island only to fish. Their stays on the island were so short that Fenwick Island did not acquire the large shell mounds or other indications of prolonged visits by the Native Americans that once marked the coast near Cape Henlopen.
